Ourslers first large-scale Italian Museum exhibition opens at MACRO. Curated by Danilo Eccher.
The sixty works gathered in the halls of the Roman museum range from the nineties to present, create a highly charged and unique route through the Artists practice. Ourslers most recent project is among those on view, "9 / 11," a series of photographs that he took at Ground Zero immediately after the attack on the Twin Towers. Also on view is "Judy," which illustrated the narrative of a woman suffering from MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder). The dynamics of mental dissociation, which leads the viewer through a doubling of faces and voices, becomes at the same time, Oursler believes, a metaphor for the postmodern personality.
In other works, faces are shown crying or talking on different surfaces: enormous puppet heads lying in front of soothing floral backgrounds, spheres or discs of fiberglass, overlapping parallelepipeds. The human presence, which often breaks down until reduced to one eye (with clear reference to the objective of the camera) or a mouth. The exhibitions energy, tight and syncopated, remains even when all references to the humanoid disappear, as light in Talking (1996), where the only presence is a bulb that turns on and off like a hysterical beat, accompanied by voice.
