City Council, Ukraine
Nov. 15 - Nov. 17, 2013
"Fear, superstition, and ignorance surround this plague, much like those of the past. This cultural component of HIV, of misinformation surrounding it, can be seen as having viral properties too in this Information Age. Burroughs and Anderson mined the linguistics concept when popularizing the metaphor, "language is a virus". While making an artwork for The Elena Pinchuk AntiAids Foundation to be projected onto the City Council building of Kiev, I wanted to ask the viewer to think about what ideas have infected them. Visually, I use a group of bilingual performers from NYC and the Ukraine as a sort of chorus to speak a poetic text related to the spread of information versus disease. It is my hope that one can battle the viral nature of bad information with humor and ideas."
